Bye Bye Benny

According to CNN:

Ben Carson doesn't "see a political path forward" in the Republican presidential nomination process, and will not attend Thursday's GOP presidential debate in his hometown of Detroit, he said in a statement.
But Carson stopped short of saying he was officially leaving the race.
He doesn't have to say it. We get it.

But I can tell you exactly why his campaign failed: I decided to vote for him. That is the final nail in the coffin for any candidate. Voters flee from an Ed endorsement like lemmings over the cliff, which is a good analogy since they seem to be voting more for Trump.

Quotes of the Day

Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, about Donald Trump's equivocating about support from the Ku Klux Klan:

"When I see something that runs counter to who we are as a party and as a country, I will speak up, so today I want to be very clear about something. If a person wants to be the nominee of the Republican Party, there can be no evasion and no games. They must reject any group or cause that is built on bigotry. This party does not prey on people's prejudices. We appeal to their highest ideals.... This is fundamental. And if someone wants to be our nominee, they must understand this."
Donald Trump's reply:

"Paul Ryan, I don't know him well, but I'm sure I'm going to get along great with him. And if I don't, he's going to have to pay a big price."
I only have one thing to say:

Bernie Sanders versus Margaret Thatcher

Yesterday, my wife asked my daughter and me who she should vote for in the primary. I suggested Ben Carson, because he is smart and has some good ideas. Then my 18 year old daughter suggested Bernie Sanders.

Before throwing accusations of my failings as a parent, I should add that my daughter is:
1. Honest,
2. Doesn't smoke or do drugs.
3. Has never had sex (because she told me. See #1).
4. Attends school regularly and gets good grades.
Admittedly, I epically failed on the political front. 4 out of 5 ain't bad.

The worst part about her support for Bernie Sanders was her facts were all wrong (not unlike his facts being wrong, but that's another matter). Here is the breakdown of what she said:

1. "He is only going to raise taxes on the rich." Lovely, except his plan says he will implement a 2.2% income tax across the board (that means everyone) to pay for his "Medicare for everyone plan" (aka universal healthcare). Here is what his website says:

Sen. Sanders has introduced a plan to expand health care coverage to every American. Paid for by a 6.2 percent income-based health care premium paid by employers, a 2.2 percent income-based premium paid by households, progressive income tax rates, taxing capital gains and dividends the same as income from work, limiting tax deductions for the rich, adjusting the estate tax, and savings from health tax expenditures.
2. "He is going to give us free healthcare." See number 1 above.

3. "He is going to give us free college." From his website:

Paid for by imposing a tax on Wall Street speculators that would generate about $300 billion in revenue.
This is the harder part because neither my daughter nor Sanders understands anything about economics.

First, when you tax an activity, you get less of it. Which means a lot of that Wall Street activity that would have been paying that tax will slow down, relative to the amount of the tax. For example, if you were to put a punitive-style cigarette level tax on Wall Street activity, you could bring trading activity to a screeching halt. You might even crash the stock markets. My guess is Bernie dips his toe in this, and when he sees the negative reaction, he will (hopefully) stop.

Regardless, this will create all kinds of pain in other areas, from retirement funds to pensions to individual investors who will end up paying for this. But since my daughter isn't a stockholder yet, she is clueless as to the cost of this for her.

Second, there is another downriver aspect of this: With Wall Street activity curtailed, there will be more out-of-work brokers competing with my daughter for jobs.

Even my old progressive buddy Rodak has a better (albeit cynical) idea why this will never work:

The reason is that without the promise of free college on the other side of military service, it would be impossible for the military to keep enlistment levels high enough to man the perpetual war and line the pockets of the oligarchs.
It would mean reinstating the draft--this time with girls being taken--and that would mean living the 'sixties all over again, and then some.
To my daughter, I would refer her to this quote from Margaret Thatcher:

"Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They always run out of other people's money."

Super Tuesday's Primary Results

Here are the states by winner. first, the Republican primaries:

Donald "Joe Millionaire" Trump: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Virginia, and Vermont.
Ted Cruz: Alaska, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Marco Rubio: Minnesota.

On the Democratic side:

Hillary Goldman Clinton: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
Bernie Sanders: Colorado, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Vermont.
Now to the meat: The delegate count so far. On the Republican side, 1,237 delegates are needed to win. Here are the numbers (from RealClearPolitics):

Trump: 285
Cruz: 161
Rubio: 87
Kasich: 25
Carson: 8
On the Democratic side (also from RealClearPolitics), 2,382 delegates are needed to win. Here is the count without the superdelegates:

Clinton: 543
Sanders: 349
Speaking of superdelegates, why does the "Democratic" Party have the least democratic system? Look at the count with the superdelegates:

Clinton: 1000
Sanders: 371
In other news, this video of Chris Christie is running around the internet. This was during Christie's endorsement of Donald Trump. Watch Christie's expression during Trump's speech (video from the Daily Mail):

Buyer's remorse? Some people are calling it a "hostage video".

Last minute voter notes

If you are voting in any of the primaries today, here are some last minute things to know about each of the candidates:

Marco Rubio has accepted more money from Wall Street than any candidate from either party. (Reuters)

Bernie Sanders says he will raise taxes on all voters, although not in so many words. (Money via Yahoo Finance)

Hillary Goldman Clinton wants to make community colleges free. This basically extends out public school system to community colleges, and we all know how well the public school system works! (Money via Yahoo Finance)

Donald "Joe Millionaire" Trump will repeal Obamacare, the Dodd-Frank Act, and the Constitution. Ok, maybe not the last one, I hope...(Money via Yahoo Finance)

Ted Cruz wants to make soylent green a viable food source. Just kidding, but he will change Social Security to "raise the retirement age and cap increases in the cost-of-living adjustment". (Money via Yahoo Finance)

In other news, USAToday reports that Ben Carson is leading the field for Trump's vice presidential pick:

Morning Consult asked Republican and Republican-leaning independent voters over the weekend who the real estate magnate should pick and came up with this result:
• Ben Carson 11%
• Ted Cruz  9%
• Marco Rubio 9%
• John Kasich 8%
• Chris Christie 8%
• Jeb Bush 4%
Nearly 40% of respondents said they didn’t know or didn’t have an opinion. Two percent picked Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks and star on ABC's Shark Tank.
Personally, I think Trump should pick Nancy Pelosi. It wouldn't be the first time he went with a woman he shouldn't have...

RIP George Kennedy

From CNN:

George Kennedy, the brawny, Oscar-winning character actor known for playing cops, soldiers and blue-collar authority figures in such films as "Cool Hand Luke," "Airport" and the "Naked Gun" films, has died. He was 91.
Kennedy died Sunday in Boise, Idaho, said his grandson, Cory Schenkel.
"He passed Sunday morning, due to old age and some health issues," Schenkel said.
Here is one of his classic scenes from Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear:

Have a Super Tuesday!

Here are my thoughts on the remaining candidates, as voters head to the polls in many states for today's presidential primaries:

Donald "Joe Millionaire" Trump: Sieg heil! (Gott helfe uns allen!)
(hat tip to Delaware Liberal for the pic)

Ted Cruz: First, let's shut down the government. Great, now that's done...What? What do we do next? Um...um...um...

Marco Rubio: Establishment tool.

Ben Carson: The only honest man running, which is why he's behind in the polls.

John Kasich: He is ok too, except for his plan to wipe out ISIS. The last two presidents tried wiping out Islamist groups, and failed. If Kasich gets elected, we still haven't learned the law of holes: If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.

Hillary Goldman Clinton: Psst? Hey buddy? Vote for me, ok? I'll make you rich...and beautiful...

Bernie Sanders: Kaiser Wilhelm introduced socialist programs in pre-WWI Germany. Lenin brought and expanded them to Russia. During the 20th century, most European nations and China added them. Between outright failure, and bankrupting countries, socialism has failed everywhere, or had to be severely overhauled to keep going. With success like that, let's bring it to America!
