On a slow news day, the media is faced with two options: Elevate a lesser story to lede, or just recycle the same old news you have been reporting (otherwise known as extending a news cycle well beyond the 4 day shelf life).
Today, the Right-wing media chooses the "elevate a lesser story" option...
Fox News:
A Puerto Rican nationalist who served 35 years in prison for his ties to the FALN terror group stepped off at the head of New York City's Puerto Rican Day Parade Sunday, with a top city official by his side.This sort of thing is a stain on all Puerto Ricans, regardless of their views on Puerto Rican statehood. If Muslims held a parade and honored a terrorist, there would be a tremendous backlash.
Oscar Lopez Rivera drew cheers and boos as he stood on the first float of the parade, which moved up Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
Organizers had offered to honor Lopez Rivera with the parade's "National Freedom Award," but he declined after a backlash that saw sponsors, including AT&T and Jet Blue, and politicians like New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo pull out.
Contrast this with the CNN lede:
CNN:
The Russia "cloud" is growing over President Donald Trump and threatening to wreck another week for the embattled White House as one of his closest allies tries to avoid a public spectacle on Capitol Hill.In other words, expect much Leftist media hype for the Sessions' testimony this week. However, the fact Sessions volunteered to testify should tell you all you need to know. Expect another "nothing burger" this week. The so-called "Russia cloud" is like an overcast day that produces no rain. It just hovers.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions' announcement that he would testify before Senate Russia investigators caught everyone -- including the intelligence committee -- by surprise. Now, before he even testifies, the focus is both on Sessions and whether or not he would appear before the TV cameras like former FBI Director James Comey did last week, when 19.5 million Americans watched.
Speaking of hovering dark clouds...
Yahoo News:
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., allowed herself a bit of nostalgia Friday, yearning for the days of an administration friendlier to Democrats: that of former President George W. Bush.Nancy, name all the RINOs you can, in 5 seconds? Go!
Pelosi was touting her bipartisan bona fides on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” citing her relationship with former President Bush as proof of her willingness to reach across the aisle. When an interviewer suggested she’s “missing him now,” Pelosi conceded she did.
“I wish [George W. Bush] were president now,” she said, laughing. “I wish Mitt Romney were president. I wish John McCain were president.”
Seriously though, leave it to Nancy to give us flawed political analysis;
She then suggested that President Trump was elected not by voters who were particularly enamored with him and his policies, but Republicans merely following the party line.
“As far as the Republicans, the people voted for him, as almost like any mammal will do. They were just voting and voting a certain way.”First, it is nice to know Republicans still qualify as mammals. Imagine the outcry if a similar comment were made about Democrats?
Second, if it were true that Republican voters were what swung the election in Trump's favor, wouldn't the Republicans have won in 2008 and 2012? Or was Obama just so beloved by Republicans?
