Weekly Finale: Don Rickles

Normally, for the weekly finale, I cover music here. But this week had a big news story which got pushed back because of more important stories: The death of Don Rickles at the age of 90.

The comedy stylings of Don Rickles were like pouring salt on an open wound. Rickles was politically incorrect for the 1970's, let alone today. It was like verbal slapstick, except the slapstick had a nail in it. But that was his charm. Every one knew what they were getting from him, and he gave it.

Following is a video of some of six of his appearances on the old Dean Martin celebrity roasts from the 1970's. I will warn you: By today's standards, this video is extremely un-PC. This is not for you social justice warriors or snowflakes. For the rest of you, enjoy a style of comedy we won't likely see any time soon:

Some people might call Rickles racist or a variety of other codewords. But they are missing what he did for us, and that was to prove the adage about "sticks and stones", specifically that words can never hurt us, and can frequently be funny as hell.

RIP Don Rickles.

That is all for me this week. Enjoy your weekend folks.
