NFL Wakes Up: Today's News for October 9th

NBC Bay Area:
Vice President Mike Pence was in attendance for the Indianapolis Colts-San Francisco 49ers game on Sunday, but he wasn't there for long.

That's because he left Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis after several 49ers players took a knee for the playing of the national anthem.

Pence, the former governor of Indiana, took to Twitter to announce his early departure, writing that he couldn't "dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem."

I left today's Colts game because President Trump and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem. At a time when so many Americans are inspiring our nation with their courage, resolve, and resilience, now, more than ever, we should rally around our Flag and everything that unites us. While everyone is entitled to their opinions, I don't think it's too much to ask NFL players to respect the Flag and our National Anthem. I stand with President Trump, I stand with our soldiers, and I will always stand for our Flag and our National Anthem.

More than 20 San Francisco players could be seen taking a knee during the anthem before Sunday's Week 5 contest, according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco. No Colts players could be seen protesting.
That sound you hear is the billionaires (aka "the establishment") winning the war with the millionaires (aka "the NFL players").

In case you haven't figured it out, the establishment likes our unending wars with Islam, and patriotism is the perfect tool to encourage them. You will notice Pence specifically mentioned the soldiers? That was intentional, especially lumping them in with the flag and the National Anthem.

While our soldiers deserve special recognition, lumping them in with other symbols of nationalism belies what is really going on, which is the military industrial complex running a never-ending war, and using nationalism to justify it.

So why would the establishment care about the ongoing kneeling protests? It could be racism, but it is more likely that the protests are getting too close to their ongoing pet cause, namely the War on Islam.

But this story gets better:
National anthem protests across the NFL began last season when former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who remains without an NFL job, refused to stand in protest of racial inequality and police brutality. His former teammates have continued to take a knee during the national anthem this season.

Eric Reid, a 49ers safety who knelt alongside Kaepernick last season, reemphasized earlier this year and after Sunday's game that kneeling for the anthem is not designed to disrespect the military or the flag. The act is designed to press for equality and tackle what Reid says is "systemic oppression."

"This is not about the military," Reid told NBC Sports Bay Area. "This is not about the flag. This is not about the anthem. My mother served in the armed forces. Three of my uncles served in the armed forces. In fact, my mom would’ve gone to the Persian Gulf War had she not been pregnant with me. I have the upmost respect for the military, the anthem and the flag. So I will say that every time you interview me."
Reid also suggested that Pence's exit seemed to be a "PR stunt."

"He knew our team has had the most players protest," Reid told NBC Sports Bay Area. "He knew that we were probably going to do to it again. This is what systemic oppression looks like. A man with power comes to a game, he tweets a couple things out and leaves the game with an attempt to thwart our efforts."
Systemic oppression? Excuse me...

A vice president walking out on a protest by a bunch of overpaid children is systemic oppression? Eric Reid wouldn't know systemic oppression if it bit him in the butt.

But Reid is right about it being a PR stunt, as the next story shows the billionaires starting to get serious:

Fox News:
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Sunday any player who disrespects the flag will not play.

Jones’ comments, the strongest made on the anthem controversy, came after he was asked about Vice President Mike Pence leaving the game in Indianapolis early after several San Francisco 49ers players took a knee during the national anthem.

"I know this, we cannot ... in the NFL in any way give the implication that we tolerate disrespecting the flag," he said following the Cowboys’ 35-31 loss to the Green Bay Packers. "We know that there is a serious debate in this country about those issues, but there is no question in my mind that the National Football League and the Dallas Cowboys are going to stand up for the flag. So we're clear."
He who pays the piper calls the tune.

Now back to the real news...

Washington Times:
Determined to finally solve illegal immigration, the White House submitted a 70-point enforcement plan to Congress Sunday proposing the stiffest reforms ever offered by an administration — including a massive rewrite of the law in order to eliminate loopholes illegal immigrants have exploited to gain a foothold in the U.S.

The plans, seen by The Washington Times, include President Trump’s calls for a border wall, more deportation agents, a crackdown on sanctuary cities and stricter limits to chain migration — all issues the White House says need to be part of any bill Congress passes to legalize illegal immigrant “Dreamers” currently protected by the Obama-era deportation amnesty known as DACA.

But the plans break serious new ground on the legal front, giving federal agents more leeway to deny illegal immigrants at the border, to arrest and hold them when they’re spotted in the interior, and to deport them more speedily. The goal, the White House said, is to ensure major changes to border security, interior enforcement and the legal immigration system.

“Anything that is done addressing the status of DACA recipients needs to include these three reforms and solve these three problems,” a senior White House official told The Times. “If you don’t solve these problems then you’re not going to have a secure border, you’re not going to have a lawful immigration system and you’re not going to be able to protect American workers.”

All told, the list includes 27 different suggestions on border security, 39 improvements to interior enforcement and four major changes to the legal immigration system.
Any time a problem requires 70 things to fix it, odds are the problem hasn't been understood. This is no exception.

This one isn't difficult, yet nobody wants to see the TRUTH. Here are some basic facts, and how both political sides miss them:
1. Immigrants (both illegal and legal) come to the U.S. because even the worst life here is better than the best living they can have in their own country. The Left glosses over this one because it runs contrary to their desire to create a bigger welfare state than we already have.
2. Immigrants choose to come to the U.S. illegally because the legal means are far too complex for most of them to understand, when the legal means aren't cost prohibitive and take too many years. Trump's plan to make an already complex regulatory tapestry even more complex just makes the existing problem worse.
The overwhelming majority of the illegal immigrants aren't "bad people" (in the sense of trying to actively hurt other people), but just people leaving poverty. There aren't tens of millions of murderers, thieves and rapists in this country illegally. It is the good people who we need to give a legal and easy means into this country.

But the numbers show Trump is missing the point: The source of the problem is the legal immigration system, but he only makes 4 changes to that. Instead, he concentrates most of the changes on border security (27 "suggestions") and interior enforcement (39 "improvements").

While strong border security and interior enforcement are desirable, until you fix the flood of immigrants who SHOULD be legal, then you cannot have true border security and interior enforcement. The numbers are against you. It is like a game of whack-a-mole, but with tens of millions of holes.
