Debunking the Free Lunch

Many people smarter than me have debunked the free lunch mentality of the socialist progressives on the Left. Here are a few examples:

"Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They always run out of other people's money. It's quite a characteristic of them."--Margaret Thatcher

"This would be a great world to dance in if we didn't have to pay the fiddler."--Will Rogers

"The State is the great fiction through which everyone endeavours to live at the expense of everyone else."--Frédéric Bastiat

"What the welfare system and other kinds of governmental programs are doing is paying people to fail. In so far as they fail, they receive the money; in so far as they succeed, even to a moderate extent, the money is taken away."--Thomas Sowell

"Capitalism is using its money; we socialists throw it away."--Fidel Castro

"The only certain fact about Russian affairs under the Soviet regime with regard to which all people agree is: that the standard of living of the Russian masses is much lower than ... the paragon of capitalism, the United States of America. If we were to regard the Soviet regime as an experiment, we would have to say that the experiment has clearly demonstrated the superiority of capitalism and the inferiority of socialism."--Ludwig von Mises

"I want people to take thought about their condition and to recognize that the maintenance of a free society is a very difficult and complicated thing and it requires a self-denying ordinance of the most extreme kind. It requires a willingness to put up with temporary evils on the basis of the subtle and sophisticated understanding that if you step in to do something about them you not only may make them worse, you will spread your tentacles and get bad results elsewhere."--Milton Friedman

"There ain't no such thing as a free lunch."--American proverb
