Weekend Review: The Libertarian Debate

My weekend started Friday night with the Libertarian Debate, between former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, founder and CEO John McAfee (of antivirus software fame), and Austin Petersen. Who is Austin? From his campaign website:

Austin Petersen is a constitutional libertarian, who believes in economic freedom and personal liberty. Petersen’s passion for limited government led him to a job at the Libertarian National Committee in 2008, and then eventually to the Atlas Economic Research Foundation. After fighting for liberty in our nation’s capital, Petersen took a job as an associate producer for Judge Andrew Napolitano’s show FreedomWatch on the Fox Business Network. After the show’s cancellation, Austin returned to D.C. to work for the Tea Party institution FreedomWorks, and subsequently started his own business venture, Stonegait LLC, and a popular national news magazine The Libertarian Republic.
So basically we have a guy who can't hold a job. Of course, the same could be said of many politicians, so we will overlook this for a moment.

Back to the debate...

John McAfee said the right things, but he came off looking like a guy who would be right at home on a surfboard.

Although Gary Johnson also said the right things, I had to give the debate to Austin Petersen. Petersen was smooth as silk in his answers, sounding almost like Ron Paul, without the scowl, whereas Johnson stumbled over his answers occasionally.

Johnson needs to work on his debate performance if he is going to have any hope of debating Trump or Hillary. At this point, Johnson would get mopped up by either of the two majors' frontrunners.

As for Petersen, he is a mystery to me. Frankly, his résumé sucks. Flittering around the political world doesn't scream "presidential material" to me. On the other hand, his debate performance was flawless, even impressive. He might be able to out-debate Trump and Hillary, but his résumé may keep him from ever getting there.

Here is the entire debate. It will be continued next Friday night on Fox Business.
