No Sympathy for the Devils (aka GOP Politicians)

The infamous RINO David Frum has a new editorial in The Atlantic, "The Impossible Task Facing Republican Leaders". As Frum describes it, these poor politicians have to salvage their party while fighting back the Trumpistas. Oh, the horrors!

Why should anyone be surprised this is happening? The Republican Party has spent the last 22 years alienating voters, especially their base.

Let's start with Ross Perot. When Bush lost his re-election campaign in 1992 because of Perot, the GOP learned it's lesson and gave us the "Contract with America" during the 1994 mid-term election. Unfortunately, the "Contract" wasn't fully implemented, and eventually the congressional Republicans booted Newt Gingrich, effectively killing the "Contract".

In 2000, the Republicans moved farther to the left with the "compassionate conservative" George W. Bush. I always found it ironic how much progressives hated him, even though he did more to increase the size of government than even Bill Clinton did. But then progressives never make much sense with their logic.

Aside from Bush's warmongering, he was happy to sign anything the Congress gave him. Even when the Congress flipped to the Democrats in 2006, there was Bush with his happy pen, signing over the government.

And then Bush's Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke crashed the economy, with the help of very ill-advised government regulations encouraging looser home mortgage financing requirements (supported by both Republicans and Democrats). So the Republicans worked together with the Democrats to come up with a bipartisan economic fix, otherwise known as the "Wall Street bailout". This led to Obama's election...and Occupy Wall Street.

Fortunately for the Republicans, Obama made the partisan faux pas known as Obamacare, and they were able to milk it to gain control of the Congress in 2010, and the Senate in 2012. Yet still, government spending was out of control with no results for the average American except fewer people working and higher taxes and more price inflation.

In presidential politics, the Republicans offered us such epic losers as John McCain and Mitt Romney. McCain came off as "George W. Bush II", while Romney was the RINO who created the healthcare plan which was the basis for Obamacare. Why vote for a hamburger that tastes like it's from McDonalds, when you can get the real McDonalds hamburger?

In summary, for the last 22 years, every Republican politician who has gone against the Washington establishment has either been kicked out (i.e. Newt Gingrich) or marginalized (i.e. Tom Coburn) or marginalized until they got in line (i.e. John McCain).

So here is the new conversation:

GOP Establishment: How about Jeb Bush?
GOP Voters: Nah. Too establishment. How about Donald Trump?
GOP Establishment: How about John Kasich?
GOP Voters: Nah. Too dull. How about Trump?
GOP Establishment: How about Ted Cruz?
GOP Voters: The same guy who screwed the pooch with the government shutdown? No thanks.
GOP Establishment: How about Ted Cruz AND Carly Fiorina?
GOP Voters: I just told you, NO CRUZ! How about Trump?
GOP Establishment: Um...ok...
Meanwhile, as Frum explains, the Republican politicians are working hard in the background to make sure Trump doesn't get elected.

So the same group of morons who created the situation which led to Trump's rise, are now trying to work against him in the background? Warning: Irony-rich environment ahead. Proceed with laughter...
