Financial Times: FBI swamped by an avalanche of terror tips after Orlando shooting
Here's a question for anyone criticizing the FBI: How can you tell someone will commit a terrorist act in the future when the suspect may not have decided themselves?
Fox News: Florida police search for child who was attacked by alligator at Disney resort
So 2 year old boy is taken away by a wild gator last night. Naturally:
The frantic search for a 2-year-old boy snatched Tuesday night by an alligator at an Orlando Disney resort and dragged into a lagoon has become a recovery effort, authorities told Fox News.
Though authorities were still planning to scour the Seven Seas Lagoon at Disney World’s The Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, hope had begun to fade Wednesday morning and Orange County Sheriff's Office PIO Jeff Williamson told Fox News the operation had moved into a search-and-recovery phase.
“The sad reality of it is it’s been several hours and we’re not likely going to recover a live body,” Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said earlier.
Four alligators had already been caught in the lagoon and euthanized early Wednesday morning, but no evidence had been found indicating any of those reptiles were responsible for attacking the boy, a Florida Fish and Wildlife official said.So far, no connection has been made between the gators and ISIS...
CNN: The real danger in Orlando
I was surprised to see an opinion piece/news analysis as the "big story" at CNN, but it does make a good point:
One of the most senior and experienced counterterrorism officials in the Middle East recently told me the West is failing to fully understand the impact of ISIS.
"It's not an army, it's not about religion, it's not even a movement," he said. "It's a label. Every mad and upset young man can just now say they are part of ISIS."This isn't unprecedented. The Soviet Union was in contact with Lee Harvey Oswald, and they didn't want him. However, they weren't about to stand in the way if he wanted to kill the American president, which he did.
The old rumor is that Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin used to refer to Westerners who supported communism as "useful idiots". Angry young men looking for a cause are a dime a dozen, and are as old as history.
Billy Joel described it best:
There's a place in the world for the angry young man
With his working class ties and his radical plans
He refuses to bend, he refuses to crawl
And he's always at home with his back to the wall.
He's proud of the scars and the battles he's lost
He struggles and bleeds as he hangs on the cross
And he likes to be known as the angry young man.
Give a moment or two to the angry young manJoel also gave this astute analysis:
With his foot in his mouth and his heart in his hand
He's been stabbed in the back, he's been misunderstood
It's a comfort to know his intentions are good
He sits in a room with a lock on the door
With his maps and his medals laid out of the floor
And he likes to be known as the angry young man.
Even after the angry young man has caused his damage, life still goes on today.
I believe I've passed the age of consciousness and righteous rage,
I've found that just surviving was a noble fight
I once believed in causes too, had my pointless point of view
Life went on no matter who was wrong or right.
